I am not sure when they were made, but judging from the hair styles and the clothes the movies of vertigo were probably made in the fifties...19 that is. Also, I would guess that the posters made for other countries were made sometime later. Buffalo soldiers and the Matrix Revolutions much more recently made by the attitudes and the technology used in the posters and movies.
The type of movie, and the way advertise varies obviously; the attack of the fifty foot woman, the matrix revolutions-are action pictures based on the movement and subjects used. The Wizard of Oz because of its photographs and cartoons was made to appeal to several age audiences. The Buffalo soldiers movie appears to be a comedy. The Vertigo is a romance or at least has romantic overtones because of the couple embracing on most of the posters. I have no idea why the poster for the one movie Vertigo has a skull on it unless it is a warning against the movie or to signify it deals with death.
The colors used in the various movies varies agains depending on the movie. Green and black; action, the Fifty Foot woman...orange and flesh tones are inviting-warm. The Wizard of Oz has pastels and warm colors; once again inviting -especially to children. Red, White, and Blue obviously are the colors of our flag and are used in films with patriotic themes, the same as the posters. Vertigos colors catch your attention; especially red and its contrast with the orange or gold.
Some of the posters are from Italy. China, Spain, Mexico, Britian, and last but not least; the United Sates mainly.
The War posters are advertising enlistment, and using various techniques to do so. The man with the pointed finger draws you in. There is no doubt in the viewer's mind that he is talking to you individually. The more seductive one with the lady portrays the sailor's nlife if 'he would only join the Navy!' The poster selling bonds makes you feel like well I am glad it is them, and we better do something to help. The skeleton makes me question the war effort entirely, and to make me think twice about enlisting- I guess. The German man holding out his hand is trying to make one feel welcome and on the same level as them..., especially since their image is not so good. The war poster were mad ethroughout the twentieth century I would imagine, especially during wartime.
The one Vertigo movie poster makes you feel like there is a love tangle based on the couple above the ladder, othe rthan that and the skull most of the posters are the same, even in the other countries for this movie.
The posters for war that come right out and say enlist now; not only make you feel a sense of duty to do so, but also close the deal by coming right out and asking one to enlist.
The flow of the posters once again varies from poster to poster. The action films have athree point flow to them. The wartime posters are striaght out and upfront... except for the one with the seductive female and then it seems to flow up her. The Matric resolutions draw you in and make oyu want to know more by the way the actors are facing...inviting also. The Wizard of Oz varies because of the box seperate from the real life characters; and forces your eyes to see it all.
In Vertogo there is a flow between the man and woman that makes you wonder what is so upsetting or going on? Each movie has a reason for seeing the elements of each poster for a reason mostly to draw you in, then to view what they consider essential issues or points and then give you the information you need to see the movie or make a decision. The poster to sell bonds give me the feeling like what are they going to do if we don't by the expression and direction of the face.
This poster scares me. I do not like angry people and you can tell that if nothing else. You can tell that the theme is Hispanic and that they have a beef with european settlers. This poster causes you to want to find out more about it. What is the author trying to say? It causes one to step back and rethink the issue at hand. I wasn 't sure what the entire issue was or is. With so many countries mad at us all the time, at least it feels that way - it causes despair. That could be the message wanted - is to make the viewer make a connection emotionally to the people of the poster.
After I read about it I realized that they too feel like they deserve the territory lost them. I thought we bought it and they were glad to sell it, at least that was the way my history book read. It makes you wonder who you can trust! On the other hand it could be that now that we are prospering, and everyone else seems to be able to get in on the action why should'nt they...?
I am not making any judgements, but it did raise my awareness. You cannot deny someone's experience or feelings. These are their own and they are entitled to them if nothing else. I do not like anger and in some ways it turns me off... I want to backlash is necessary to defend myself. I am not sure it would have been so effective-if made differently ; but it might of been better on the blood-pressure.
